Commemorative Plaque This plaque was placed in the center of Salem Square to commemorate the first known observance of Independence Day.  The plaque was installed in 1966, the 200th anniversary of the founding of Salem.

Salem's water works included a cistern with a hand pump on the Southwest corner of the Square.  Today a working replica is available for visitors who wish to try their hand at pumping water. Water Pump

Water Pump A demonstration of the pump.

This photograph of the pump was taken in 2004, approximately ten years after the two photographs above.
