Butner House

The home of the hatter, Adam Butner.  This home was built in the same style as the Herbst house, with the porch extending over the sidewalk.

The reconstructed home and workshop of the tailor, Johann Gottlob Schroeter.  The original house was removed in the early twentieth century.

Butner Hat Shop

The reconstructed workshop of the hatter, Adam Butner.  The original shop was built four years before his home, located to the north.

Current Use:
Old Salem shop selling baked goods.

Winkler Bakery Winkler Bakery

Restored

Built by Salem's master builder, Johann Gottlob Krause, as the bakery and home of Thomas Buttner.  In 1807 the building was taken over by Christian Winkler.  The building remained in his family until the late 1920's.

Current Use:
Upper floor: Restaurant
Lower Floor: Old Salem Bakery selling bread, Moravian Sugar Cake and Tea cookies baked in the wood fired oven, and also other baked goods.


Miksch House

Restored

The first privately owned home in Salem belonged to Matthew and Henrietta Miksch.  He and his wife sold a variety of goods from their house, most notably tobacco and gingerbread.
